The novella "The Sandman" was adapted into a play in 1997 by Reiner Lewandowski, the then artistic director of the E.T.A. Hoffmann Theater in Bamberg, for the puppet theater (founded by Klaus Loose). It tells the tragic story of the sensitive Nathanael, who finds himself exposed to the evil forces in the form of the Sandman.
