The cathedral was built by the canonized imperial couple Henry and Cunigunde in the early 11th century, burned down several times, and was rebuilt a second time between 1200 and 1237. The architecture impresses with its clear forms. The famous and nameless Bamberg Rider and the sculptures of the cathedral are unmatched in Germany: the French influences are unmistakable! None other than Tilman Riemenschneider created the imperial tomb, and Veit Stoß carved the altar of Mary. Through the Gothic cloister, you enter the diocesan museum, which is filled with high-quality sculptures. The most significant textiles in the world, such as the 11th-century Star Cloak - a masterpiece of medieval textile art, the preserved vestment of Pope Clement II, as well as the largest preserved Ottonian cross, are highlights of our museum.
