The cathedral, treasury, and cloister offer outstanding cultural-historical as well as moving religious experiences. In 90 minutes, you will experience highlights of European art history. The cathedral was built by the canonized imperial couple Heinrich and Kunigunde in the early 11th century, burned down several times, and was rebuilt for the second time between 1200 and 1237. The architecture impresses with its clear language of forms. The famous and unnamed Bamberg Horseman and the sculptures of the cathedral have no equal in Germany: the French influences are unmistakable! None other than Tilman Riemenschneider created the imperial tomb, and Veit Stoß carved the altar of Mary. Through the Gothic cloister, you enter the diocesan museum, which is filled with high-profile sculptures. The world's most significant textiles, such as the 11th-century Star Cloak – a masterpiece of medieval textile art, the preserved vestments of Pope Clement II, and the largest surviving Ottonian cross are highlights of our museum. Cathedral. Treasury. Cloister – Exciting. Inspiring. Experienceable.
