The cathedral, treasury, and cloister offer outstanding cultural-historical as well as moving religious experiences. In 90 minutes you will experience highlights of European art history. The cathedral was built by the canonized imperial couple Heinrich and Kunigunde in the early 11th century, burned down several times, and was rebuilt for the second time between 1200 and 1237. The architecture captivates with its clear language of form. The famous and unnamed Bamberg Rider and the sculptures of the cathedral are unmatched in Germany: the French influences are unmistakable! None other than Tilman Riemenschneider crafted the imperial tomb, and Veit Stoß sculpted the Mary altar. Through the Gothic cloister, you enter the diocese museum, which is equipped with high-caliber sculptures. The world's most significant textiles, such as the star mantle from the 11th century – a masterpiece of medieval textile art, the preserved liturgical garment of Pope Clement II, and the largest preserved Ottonian cross are the highlights of our museum. Cathedral. Treasury. Cloister – Exciting. Inspiring. Experienceable.
