Bamberg Symphony Orchestra - Public Conducting Competition

Since 2004, THE MAHLER COMPETITION has been one of the most prestigious competitions for young conductors worldwide. Each time, over 500 applications from around the globe reach us, but only a maximum of 24 selected talents are invited to Bamberg – for intensive working phases with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra under professional conditions that few other competitions can offer. All rounds of the competition, including the final, are public and provide fascinating insights into the work at the conductor's podium. In the two-day final, the three remaining candidates each receive two and a half hours of rehearsal time with the orchestra – an extraordinary format that makes depth and development audible. In the final concert on July 3, they conduct the same program again in front of an audience and jury. Then the audience votes online, the jury retreats for deliberation – and by the end of the evening, the winners are determined, opening the doors to an international career for them.
