Church Tour and Organ Music at Kloster Banz
Kloster Banz: Guided Tour through the Choir Stalls and Organ Matinee in the Collegiate Church
Due to high demand, the Colloquium Historicum Wirsbergense (CHW) is repeating its opening event at Kloster Banz. On Saturday, June 6, the event combines a church tour in the Collegiate Church of St. Dionysius and St. Peter with insights into the restored choir stalls – and ends with an organ matinee.
The event begins at 11 a.m. in the church. In the first part, Prof. Dr. Günter Dippold, regional heritage curator of Upper Franconia, introduces the furnishings of the Banz monastery church. The focus is on the master cabinetmaker Johann Georg Neßtfell and his work on site. Afterwards, regional cantor and basilica organist Georg Hagel will play the Seuffert organ. Registration is not required; the event is public.
What is planned for the event at Kloster Banz
The schedule is clearly structured: First, the focus is on the church space and key elements of the baroque furnishings. Dippold pays special attention to Neßtfell's work in Banz – specifically the choir stalls with their inlays and the organ case. Thus, the tour does not remain at the level of general architectural or art history, but concentrates on specific, still influential pieces of furnishing.
The second focus is on music: With the organ matinee, the church is not only explained, but also experienced as a sound space. Hagel, who works as a regional cantor and full-time church musician, will conclude the event at the Seuffert organ.
Why the restored choir stalls play a leading role
What is special is the opportunity to view the recently restored choir stalls up close. Especially with large-scale woodwork, the difference between "talking about it" and "standing in front of it" becomes clear: Restored surfaces, inlays, and details can often only be truly appreciated in the church space upon close inspection.
The fact that the choir stalls are at the center of the morning also fits with the aim of the CHW summer program, which deliberately combines tours with additional program points. In Banz, this is condensed into a three-step process of art-historical classification, direct viewing of a restored furnishing piece, and musical presentation – a format that goes beyond a classic single lecture.
Public participation without registration
Participation is possible without registration. Anyone interested in Franconian art history, church spaces, and organ music can join on Saturday morning.
