BBL Play-offs: Bayern and Bamberg advance
FC Bayern Basketball uses first match point in Trier and reaches the semifinals
FC Bayern Basketball ended the quarterfinal series against Gladiators Trier without detour and reached the semifinals of the BBL Play-offs with a clear 99:62 in game three. After an initially open start, the game swung clearly in favor of the Munich team before halftime, who limited Trier's room for maneuver through physicality, rebounding, and a stifling defense for long stretches. Bamberg is also through after three games, while Bonn and Würzburg still need a fifth game.
Bayern pulls away early after a strong second quarter
Trier held their ground at the beginning, after the first quarter Bayern was only ahead 23:20. At this stage, the hosts still managed to keep up with the pace and intensity and keep the game balanced. But in the second period, Munich noticeably increased the pressure: with much better work against the ball and consistent control of the boards, Bayern built a 57:33 lead by halftime.
Oscar da Silva was the most prominent Munich scorer at halftime with twelve points. However, it was less about individual offensive performance than the structure Bayern gave the game: Trier had to take many attacks late in the shot clock, while Munich repeatedly found rhythm through stops and quick follow-up actions.
Dominance on the boards and turnovers as game changers
The balance of power was especially visible in the rebounds. Bayern pulled out a rebound ratio of 30:9 and thus gained additional possessions – while Trier rarely got second chances. This superiority on the boards acted as a multiplier: every defensive rebound not only stopped Trier, it immediately gave Munich the opportunity to speed up the game or calmly go into the next, clean possession.
Added to this were turnovers by the hosts, which further strengthened Munich's control. At the latest after the third quarter, the game was decided: Bayern led 81:46, remained serious in the final period, and just missed the 100-point mark with the 99:62.
With this, FC Bayern is in the semifinals; the next opponent will be either RASTA Vechta or Alba Berlin.
Bamberg finishes Ulm in three games – Bonn and Würzburg go to decider
Shortly after Munich's success, Bamberg also secured their semifinal ticket. The Franconians won game three at ratiopharm Ulm 96:87 (27:28, 20:19, 32:19, 17:21) and decided the series without another game. The decisive factor was a strong third quarter, which Bamberg dominated 32:19 – a phase in which Ulm had no defensive grip and Bamberg consistently converted their shots into points.
Ibi Watson led Bamberg with 28 points and hit six of his eight three-point attempts. Demarcus Demonia contributed 17 points and six assists. For Ulm, Mark Smith (21 points, five rebounds, three assists) and Christian Sengfelder (18 points, eleven rebounds) made their mark, but could not stop the run after halftime.
The series between Bonn and Würzburg remains open. Würzburg won game four 82:70 (20:12, 16:19, 25:17, 12:22) and thus forced a decisive fifth game. Davion Mintz hit four of five threes and scored 14 points, Marcus Carr delivered 13 points, four rebounds, and seven assists. Game five will take place on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. in Bonn.
While Bayern and Bamberg finish their series early and clearly, the last semifinal ticket will only be decided in the direct duel between Bonn and Würzburg.
