The cathedral was built by the canonized imperial couple Henry and Kunigunde in the early 11th century, burned down several times, and was rebuilt a second time between 1200 and 1237. The architecture captivates with its clear form language. The famous and nameless Bamberg Horseman and the sculptures of the cathedral are unmatched in Germany: the French influences are unmistakable! None other than Tilman Riemenschneider created the imperial tomb, and Veit Stoß carved the altarpiece of Mary. Through the Gothic cloister, you enter the diocesan museum, which is filled with high-quality sculptures. The world's most significant textiles, such as the 11th-century Star Mantle – a masterpiece of medieval textile art, the preserved vestment of Pope Clement II, as well as the largest surviving Ottonian cross are highlights of our museum.
