The Purple Rose of Cairo by Woody Allen

Theater in the cinema, cinema in the theater. With “Purple Rose of Cairo” by Woody Allen, TiG presents a liaison of film and theater on stage. The play takes place in the cinema hall, on the screen, and in the courtyard of the Odeon Cinema. The dreamy Cecilia, chronically job-hunting and struggling for every penny, tries to keep herself and her unemployed, complaining husband afloat. Her only refuge from the dreary reality: excessive movie visits. In her favorite movie: “Purple Rose of Cairo,” she dreams of a beautiful life and her hero: Tom Baxter. One day he notices her romantic longings and steps out of the movie screen. With his escape into reality, he not only puts Cecilia on a new path but also brings the bewildered supporting characters of the film into serious conflicts. What will become of the untouchable dream world? Who is now the most important here? And how is this supposed to end happily? In his 1985 film (starring Mia Farrow and Jeff Daniels), Woody Allen created a witty web of his protagonists.
