The Other Side: An intense cinematic experience between loneliness and freedom

On October 22, 2026, Mariko Minoguchi's compelling film The Other Side will be shown at ODEON – Kino & Café Bamberg. The story centers around Hanna, played by Nina Hoss: a doctor who has lost everything after a fatal infection and retreats into the rugged alpine wilderness.

A woman against the boundaries of society

Hanna lives beyond the familiar order. As an infected person, she is considered a danger and is excluded by a society characterized by fear and mistrust. The portrayal observes her struggle for survival with great precision, combining existential drama with the tension of an adventure film.

Alpine vastness, human closeness

The spectacular mountain landscape becomes the second main character. Rocks, snow, forests, and barren paths create a stage of nature, silence, and threat. The cinematography by Felix Pflieger makes the vastness physically palpable, while the restrained dramaturgy focuses on Hanna's inner isolation.

A fragile community

An unexpected encounter changes Hanna's flight: in the mountains, she meets Lila, a young woman who also finds no place in society. A fragile purpose-driven community develops between the two outsiders. Together, they set off across the Alps to the south, searching for a place where freedom and belonging seem possible again.

Mariko Minoguchi's second feature film

Director and screenwriter Mariko Minoguchi follows up her award-winning debut My End. Your Beginning. Her new work combines identity, nature, friendship, and social exclusion into a atmospherically dense film drama. Nina Hoss embodies Hanna with controlled intensity and an acting skill that makes inner turmoil visible even in silent moments.

Conclusion: Cinema as a boundary experience

The Other Side awaits the audience as a visually powerful, humanly penetrating stage experience on the big screen. The combination of alpine nature, existential flight story, and cautiously growing trust invites contemplation about freedom, solidarity, and societal boundaries. Those seeking extraordinary arthouse cinema with strong acting and an intense theater atmosphere will experience an evening of lasting impact at ODEON.
