Magic, Music and Puppet Magic in Bamberg
When the curtain rises at the Bamberg Puppet Theater on November 7, 2026, a journey between darkness and light begins: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's famous opera The Magic Flute combines fairytale adventures, great music, and skillfully operated puppets into a unique stage experience.
An Opera Between Testing and Transformation
Prince Tamino is tasked with rescuing Pamina, the daughter of the Queen of the Night, from the hands of the Sun King Sarastro. At his side is Papageno, the bird catcher, whose humorous stage presence adds a human and cheerful touch to the serious plot. On the path to the truth, both must pass tests in which courage, loyalty, and inner maturity determine the outcome.
Mozart's Fairy Tale as Puppet Theater
The production brings Mozart's opera to life in a special form. Threads, figures, music, and light merge into a precise stage art where every movement carries dramatic weight. The sets are inspired by the famous designs of the Berlin architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel, giving the stage design a neoclassical yet fairytale atmosphere.
From Shadow to Light
The dramaturgy leads through mysterious realms, nocturnal threats, and ritual trials. Tamino's magic flute and Papageno's glockenspiel become ringing symbols of a world where music reconciles opposites. In the end, the evil forces of darkness retreat as Sarastro praises the happiness of the young couple: The rays of the sun dispel the darkness.
A Festive Stage Experience for Opera Lovers
The Bamberg performance lasts about 135 minutes and includes a break of approximately 15 minutes. The age recommendation is ten years. This opera experience is thus suitable for both seasoned Mozart lovers and families and young people who wish to discover classical music and theater in a sensual way.
