Scrooge's Amazing Transformation: Charles Dickens' Christmas Classic Live in Bamberg
When Ebenezer Scrooge dismisses Christmas as humbug, a fairy-tale journey through the past, present, and future begins at the ETA Hoffmann Theater. The one-hour short version of Charles Dickens' famous A Christmas Carol is aimed at schools and children from six years old, combining great stage art with a touching message about compassion, family, and the power of human closeness.
A Miser in the Glow of the Christmas Spirits
Scrooge counts every penny, brusquely dismisses charity collectors, and keeps his accountant Ben Cratchit in the office until just before Christmas Eve. Even his nephew's invitations don't reach the bitter businessman. Only when the spirits of Christmas past, present, and future knock at his door does his firmly held worldview begin to falter.
Dramaturgy Between Shadows and Hope
Jasper Brandis' production condenses Dickens' socially critical Christmas classic into a clear, immediately experiential stage event. The dramaturgy follows Scrooge's inner transformation, leading from the cold office into moving memories, present encounters, and a future that takes the audience's breath away.
Stage Design, Costumes, and Acting Artistry
Anna Siegrot is responsible for the stage and costumes, creating the atmospheric space for Scrooge's journey. Light, acoustics, and costumes shift the theater atmosphere between wintry gloom and growing Christmas cheer. The ensemble, featuring Sophie Angehrn, Iris Hochberger, Jan-Hendrik von Minden, Florian Walter, and Eric Wehlan, brings the characters to life with precise acting artistry and physical presence on stage.
A Classic for Young Theater Goers
The short version makes the material accessible for children from six years old while preserving its literary core. Dickens not only tells a ghost story but also poses the question of what makes a fulfilled life. The audience's reaction arises from the interplay of tension, humor, and the emotional moment when Scrooge rediscovers his heart.
