Hansel and Gretel: A Magical Puppet Show for the Whole Family

As the forest begins to rustle mysteriously in the evening light, the door to a fairy-tale world opens at the Bamberg Puppet Theater. On Friday, October 16, 2026, visitors will experience the fairy-tale play Hansel and Gretel in a child-friendly version inspired by Engelbert Humperdinck's famous opera.

A Fairy Tale between Forest, Witch's House, and Hope

The siblings Hansel and Gretel are sent into the forest by their mother to gather berries for dinner. As night falls, they fall into the clutches of a witch. Gretel is to serve as a maid, while Hansel is being fattened for later consumption. With courage, cleverness, and sibling love, the children manage to turn the dangerous situation around and free themselves.

Child-Friendly Dramaturgy with Special Focus on the Family

The production sets its own dramatic accent. The parents do not act out of malice, but out of desperation. Especially the mother appears as a loving figure, who does not abandon her children in the forest out of cold-hearted intention. This gentle reassessment gives the well-known fairy tale emotional depth and makes the stage version accessible to younger audiences.

Historical Puppet Stage and Lively Theater Atmosphere

The Bamberg Puppet Theater presents its fairy tales in a listed building, whose historical atmosphere shapes the stage experience. The artistically handled puppets, the concentrated acting, and the intimate acoustics create the forest, night, and witch's house in a small space. The proximity to the stage adds to the charm of this special form of stage art.

A Compact Theater Visit for Young Audiences

With a duration of about 45 minutes and no intermission, Hansel and Gretel is particularly suitable for families with children aged four and up. The story combines excitement, fairy-tale imagery, and a clear message about togetherness, courage, and the power of joint decisions.

This stage experience leads right into a world of shadows, fantasy, and hope. Those who want to experience the unique theater atmosphere of a historical puppet stage will find in Hansel and Gretel a lovingly designed family afternoon full of acting art, fairy-tale magic, and visual poetry.
