Hansel and Gretel: A Fairy-Tale Stage Experience at the Bamberg Puppet Theater

As night falls over the forest, a traditional fairy tale play full of suspense, magic, and child-friendly theater atmosphere begins at the Bamberg Puppet Theater. Hansel and Gretel fall into the clutches of a witch while searching for berries – but with courage, sibling love, and cleverness, they turn their fate around.

A Fairy Tale Between Darkness and Hope

The production draws on Engelbert Humperdinck's opera Hansel and Gretel from 1893 and tells the story in a particularly family-friendly version. The parents are not portrayed as cruel abandoners, but as people acting out of despair. This brings the emotional connection of the family to the forefront of the drama.

Puppets, Fairy Tale Forest, and Witch's House

The historic, listed theater building provides a charming backdrop for the stage art. In the performance of the puppets, the forest transforms into a mysterious resonance space: the night surprises the children, the witch's house tempts with deceptive sweetness, and the encounter with the witch heightens the tension to a crucial turning point.

Child-Friendly Production with a Special Voice

The performance is aimed at children aged four and older and lasts approximately 45 minutes without an intermission. The text was voiced by students of the E.T.A.-Hoffmann-Gymnasium Bamberg. This combination of puppet theater, narrative clarity, and fairy tale imagery creates an accessible stage experience for families and young theatergoers.

An Afternoon Full of Courage and Imagination

On Friday, October 9, 2026, the performance begins at 5:00 PM. The audience can expect a compact production with classic fairy tale material, exciting plot, and a reconciliatory finale in which the children regain their freedom and the family's suffering comes to an end.

Conclusion: Hansel and Gretel combines fairy tale suspense with warm-hearted, child-friendly drama. Anyone wanting to experience theater atmosphere, puppet art, and a story about courage and solidarity live will find a special evening for the whole family at the Bamberg Puppet Theater.
