Between Moritat and Tombstone Inscription: a Dance of Death full of Black Poetry
In the vaulted cellar of the ETA Hoffmann Theater, "Do Not Anger, You Rotting Bones" was to create an extraordinary stage experience as part of the 1st Bamberg Dance of Death Festival. Sibylle and Petra Schleicher dedicate themselves to a poetic world of gruesome Moritaten, sad kitchen songs, wild ballads, and artistically crafted tombstone inscriptions.
Death in Its Many Forms
In the third wreath, the audience encounters death not as an abstract concept but as a colorful stage figure. Strange murders, curious assassinations, frivolous robbers, infamous poachers, poor sinners, and godless offenders come together in a theatrical dance. The dramaturgy combines macabre storytelling with musical tradition and revives past language worlds.
Faded Poetry in the Sound Space of the Vault
The production relies on the suggestive power of voice, rhythm, and atmosphere. In the unique acoustics of the vaulted cellar, the kitchen songs and Moritaten gain immediate presence. The stage design is primarily created in the imagination: from words emerge dark alleys, lonely cemeteries, and figures whose fates oscillate between grotesque and sorrow.
From the Cheerful Cemetery to the Stage
A significant source stream of the event leads to Kramsach in Tyrol. Numerous tombstone inscriptions originate from the collection of the Guggenberger family, which is preserved at the so-called cheerful cemetery. Their peculiar combination of wisdom, black humor, and vivid language gives the performance a cultural-historical depth and opens the view on the alpine approach to transience.
Current Event Notice
The event scheduled for Saturday, October 17, 2026, at 8:00 PM has been canceled according to official festival information. The originally designated venue was the vaulted cellar of the ETA Hoffmann Theater in Bamberg.
Conclusion: "Do Not Anger, You Rotting Bones" promised a sensual theater experience between musical storytelling, morbid comedy, and historical poetry. The cancellation removes this special evening from the stage but preserves its strong idea: to not only mourn death but to view it as part of a living cultural history.
