Forgotten Art in Bamberg: Alexej Borutscheff in the Light of the New Residence
The Bamberg State Library opens a rare window into the work of Alexej Borutscheff (1911–1994) with this special exhibition, one of the most distinctive and colorful voices of the Bamberg post-war period. The presentation showcases drawings, woodcuts, etchings, watercolors, oil paintings, and three-dimensional works by an artist who not only observed Bamberg but transformed it into a unique visual language.
An Artist between Fantastic Realism and Literary Imagination
Borutscheff arrived in Bamberg in 1945 and lived here until his death. From trained architect to freelance artist, he developed a distinct handwriting: expressive, grotesque, poetic, and often imbued with a fairy-tale-like dark tension. His works connect architecture, figure, animal motifs, and city views into an image world that navigates between Fantastic Realism, individual symbolism, and satirical observation.
Bamberg as a Motif, Stage, and Memory Storage
Especially impressive are his views from Bamberg and the surrounding area. Churches, buildings, streets, and figures do not appear as dry documents but as concentrated visual spaces full of atmosphere. Visitors to this exhibition experience a contemplation of works where local history, fantasy, and memory permeate each other. The proximity of the studio, cathedral, and state library gives the location an additional, almost biographical intensity.
From Faust to Hoffmann: Literature as an Artistic Resonance Space
A second focus lies on Borutscheff's literary illustrations. The displayed works on E. T. A. Hoffmann and Goethe's Faust make visible how much world literature occupied him. Russian authors like Tolstoy and Solzhenitsyn also played an important role in his thinking. Power, violence, folly, love, and nonconformity condense in his sheets into an aesthetic experience that goes beyond mere illustration.
Accompanying Program with Free Impulses
The exhibition includes a free accompanying program without registration. The opening will take place on Sunday, April 26, 2026, at 11:00 AM in the reading room and will be accompanied by a lecture from the curator Prof. Dr. Bernhard Schemmel. Public tours will be offered every Tuesday at 5:00 PM. The program is complemented by art snacks on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at 12:30 PM and on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at 12:30 PM. Thus, the exhibition appeals not only to connoisseurs but also to an audience that values art education and cultural learning.
Location with Museum Depth
The Bamberg State Library is one of the major memory institutions in Bavaria. As a research library with a historical collection, digital offerings, and regular special exhibitions, it provides a framework in which art, book culture, and local history find a special connection. The exhibition takes place in the New Residence at the Cathedral Square and is thereby also spatially closely linked to the cultural center of Bamberg.
Conclusion: Forgotten Art in Bamberg is an invitation to rediscover an extraordinary artist and to view Bamberg's post-war art with fresh eyes. Anyone who appreciates expressive graphics, literary image worlds, and art historical discoveries should experience this exhibition live.
