Showing Attitude: Dietrich Bonhoeffer and the Bamberg Resistance
From October 5 to 18, 2026, the Erlöserkirche Bamberg will transform into a place of historical reflection, aesthetic experience, and personal engagement. The exhibition "Who Am I? – Showing Attitude in Stormy Times" traces the life path of the theologian and resistance fighter Dietrich Bonhoeffer and poses a pressing question to this day: How do decisions arise that, in retrospect, become visible as attitudes?
A Life Path Between Theology, Responsibility, and Resistance
The exhibition follows Bonhoeffer's biography, his thinking, and his decisions during the Nazi dictatorship. At the center is his famous poem "Who Am I?", which was written in 1944 during his imprisonment and juxtaposes contradictory self-images of inner strength, doubt, and vulnerability. Interactive elements invite teenagers and adults to connect the historical work reflection with their own present.
Art, Space, and Remembrance
In the sacred atmosphere of the Erlöserkirche, exhibition design, historical documentation, and artistic approaches converge. The Bonhoeffer exhibition is complemented by works on his experiences in Harlem, including the piece "Bonhoeffer in Harlem" by Australian artist John Young. The combination of religious space, image motifs, and biographical narration creates a focused exhibition atmosphere, where light, silence, and architectural spatial impact deepen the engagement with responsibility.
A Bamberg Perspective on Resistance
The local extension "Wölfel, Aron, Stauffenberg – Forms of Resistance" of the Willy-Aron-Society directs attention to three different paths of resistance against Nazism. Willy Aron, Hans Wölfel, and Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg represent various social backgrounds, scopes of action, and forms of dissent. The curation thereby connects supra-regional history with Bamberg's culture of remembrance.
Accompanying Program with Lecture, Art Meditation, and Music
The opening on October 5 at 7 PM marks the beginning of the exhibition with a lecture by PD Dr. Nadine Hamilton, the deputy chairperson of the International Dietrich Bonhoeffer Society. On October 7 and 14, art meditations will invite participation with the work "Bonhoeffer in Harlem" by John Young. A piano concert on October 16 connects musical impressions with the opportunity for a subsequent tour. The conclusion will be a literary-musical service on October 18 featuring jazz music and texts on Bonhoeffer.
Conclusion: An Artistic Experience with Personal Significance
The exhibition offers more than a historical documentation. It connects biography, culture of remembrance, art, and cultural education into a thought-provoking artistic experience. Visitors can expect interactive impulses, an impressive spatial effect, and questions that reach beyond the exhibition visit. Anyone wishing to engage with responsibility, civil courage, and personal attitude should definitely experience this exhibition live at the Erlöserkirche Bamberg.
