Give Waste a Basket: Children's Art for a Clean Environment

The exhibition “Give Waste a Basket” transforms the ground floor of the meeting building at the Bamberg District Office into a vibrant space for cultural education. From October 6 to 30, 2026, students from the Strullendorf Primary and Secondary School and children from the BRK Nature Kindergarten Leesten will showcase pictures and craft projects from an art competition focused on waste, the environment, and community responsibility.

Children Shape Their View of the Environment

The focus of the exhibition is on creative works that make visible the perspectives of young people on waste in their surroundings. Painting, collage, and self-designed craft objects combine aesthetic experience with ecological education. Colors, shapes, and materials tell stories about how children perceive waste, the thoughts they associate with it, and how their observations lead to their own artistic expression.

The project was initiated and carried out by Ulrike Desel from Strullendorf. Her approach combines artwork observation, pedagogical mediation, and concrete engagement for a clean environment. The exhibition thus not only showcases children's art but also an important process of cultural education: From one's own perception emerges a message, and from the message, a shared action.

An Exhibition with a Social Dimension

Additionally, a banner exhibition by the Nature Friends local group Bamberg informs about the harmful effects of cigarette butts. A collection pillar for cigarette butts vividly illustrates the quantities carelessly discarded in the environment and translates the abstract problem into a directly tangible exhibition object.

The exhibition combines installation, information design, and participatory environmental education. Visitors encounter a presentation that does not stop at mere observation but encourages reflection and participation. Those who contribute collected cigarette butts can become a butt hero at the autumn market in Strullendorf on October 11, 2026.

Art Experience and Responsibility

The atmosphere of the exhibition thrives on the contrast between childlike imagination and the serious reality of the environmental problem. Amid colorful images, unusual materials, and informative banners, an artwork observation is created that appeals to families, school classes, and all interested in the environment. The presentation makes tangible how art conveys societal topics and illuminates everyday life from a new perspective.

As a joint project of the Flussparadies Franken e. V., Ulrike Desel, the Strullendorf Primary and Secondary School, and the BRK Nature Kindergarten Leesten, the exhibition stands for local engagement. The project is supported through civic engagement within the framework of the LAG Region Bamberg e. V. with European LEADER funding.

Conclusion: An Exhibition that Inspires Action

“Give Waste a Basket” offers an accessible art experience with pedagogical depth. The exhibition shows how children's art, environmental awareness, and community action come together. Anyone visiting Bamberg should experience this exhibition live: It opens up new perspectives on seemingly ordinary materials and turns aesthetic experience into an impetus for greater responsibility in one’s own environment.
