A final evening that decides careers and brings Bamberg to life

On July 3, 2026, the Joseph-Keilberth Hall of the Bamberg Concert Hall will become a testing ground for the next generation of great conductors. In the final of THE MAHLER COMPETITION, musical precision, psychological tension, and the unique live atmosphere of an international top competition come together.

World-class under pressure

Since 2004, the competition has been one of the most prestigious of its kind for young conducting talents. More than 500 applications from around the world, three remaining candidates, and an orchestra of high caliber: This format condenses everything that makes for a great concert evening. Every gesture at the podium, every synchronization of entries, and every color nuance in the orchestration will be audible before the audience.

Mahler, Bartók, Schönberg: Music with a tension curve

The competition repertoire goes straight to the heart of the late Romantic and modern orchestral cosmos. Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 5 demands sound balance, dramatic conducting, and breath for large arcs. Bartók's Dance Suite, Schönberg's Five Pieces for Orchestra op. 16, and Thomas Adès' Dances from the opera Powder Her Face emphasize rhythmic sharpness, transparency, and stylistic control. It is here that one can truly see who can shape sound.

The rehearsal as a stage

The final begins not just in the concert, but already in the public rehearsals. For two days, the three finalists receive two and a half hours each with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra before they perform the program again in front of an audience and jury on July 3. This rarely open format makes development immediately tangible: from the first entry to the last general tension.

Bamberg's special concert venue

The Bamberg Concert Hall is home to the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra and is known for its excellent acoustics. The hall is located at Mußstraße 1, just a few minutes' walk from the old town. For those arriving by car, there is an underground parking garage next to the concert hall; additionally, the parking garages Hotel Residenzschloss and Georgendamm are recommended. By public transport, you can take the bus from the train station to the ZOB and then take line 906 or the night line 938 directly to the Konzerthalle stop.

When an evening opens doors

After the final concert, visitors vote online, the jury deliberates, and in the end, the prize winners are announced. For the winners, this evening can be the start of an international career. Those who love classical live culture experience not just a concert but a moment where artistic futures become visible. The finale of THE MAHLER COMPETITION should be experienced live in Bamberg.
