The tour, as is known, starts in Bamberg: Before we set off on our tour to Italy with our honorary conductor Manfred Honeck, we will perform great compositions at home – including two concertante character pieces, for which Julia Fischer accompanies us, about whom it was once said: Everything she plays, she executes so weightlessly that one almost forgets that this music is produced by a human and an instrument – here the music seems to simply emanate from a soul and captivate the listener. The two works for violin and orchestra included in the program are not only very close to us but also to her, as the charming top violinist has a very personal connection to them: Her mother comes from Slovakia, and the sounds of Slavic romanticism were an essential part of her childhood. The 1902 Fantasy by Josef Suk and Dvořák's Romance premiered in 1877 are technically highly demanding and folkloristically inspired compositions. They traverse highs and lows, caprices and moments of tranquility – and we can shape a magical musical dialogue sensitively with the soloist. Emotional tension from the pen of a great introspective melancholic also concludes the concerts: Tchaikovsky's beloved fifth symphony dates from 1888 and is an unsettling mirror of a time marked by crises. It is interwoven with an relentless fate motif, but also offers us alluringly expansive melodic arcs and an irresistible rhythmic brilliance – and the initial minor gloom ultimately culminates in an optimistic ending.
