Organ Sound for the Finale: Markus Willinger in Bamberg's Imperial Cathedral

On Saturday, October 31, 2026, Bamberg Cathedral Music invites you to the 26th and final Saturday concert of the year. Prof. Markus Willinger, cathedral organist in Bamberg, will perform a free organ concert in the Imperial Cathedral at 12:00 PM. Admission is free, donations are gladly accepted.

A Half Hour Full of Sound and Space

When the organ in the Bamberg Imperial Cathedral begins, musical precision combines with the special acoustics of this historic sacred space. The sound unfolds over vaults and stone, with individual registers merging into a colorful sound. Between soft lines, powerful chords, and far-reaching resonances, a concentrated live atmosphere is created.

Markus Willinger: Cathedral Organist and Professor

Markus Willinger has been the cathedral organist in Bamberg since January 1995. The musician, born in 1967 in Arnstorf, studied Catholic church music and organ at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich. He completed his master's class studies with Franz Lehrndorfer and subsequently deepened his training in organ improvisation with Daniel Roth in Saarbrücken.

Willinger concerts both nationally and internationally, teaches as a professor of organ playing at the University of Music in Nuremberg, and leads the office for church music in the Archdiocese of Bamberg as Diocesan Music Director. One of his notable projects includes a 16-part cycle of all the organ works of Johann Sebastian Bach in Bamberg Cathedral.

Musical Concentration in the Imperial Cathedral

The Saturday concert is aimed at all friends of organ music and offers an intense musical moment in the heart of Bamberg. In the interplay of orchestration, registration, synchronization, and confident conducting at the organ console, the full range of a demanding stage performance without a stage in the classical sense is revealed.

The cathedral will be closed during the concert. Thus, the music is the sole focus: no tourist passage, no distractions, but a concentrated concert experience in one of the city's most impressive spaces.

Conclusion: A Free Concert Experience for the Year-End

The 26th Saturday concert in 2026 combines free admission, high-caliber organ art, and the unmistakable sound architecture of Bamberg's Imperial Cathedral. Anyone who wants to experience organ music in its immediate, space-filling effect should enjoy this musical year-end live. Donations to support the concert series are welcome.
